Verse : 001

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : By the heaven and the night-comer
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By the heaven, and At-Târiq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star);
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : I swear by the sky and by the Night-Comer,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : By the heaven and the Morning Star
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein)―

Verse : 002

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And what shall make thee know that which the night-comer is?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And what will make you to know what At-Târiq (night-comer) is?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And what may let you know what the Night-Comer is?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : – Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?―

Verse : 003

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : It is the star shing brightly.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : (It is) the star of piercing brightness;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : The star of piercing brightness![QETafseerComment]Eng-Pickthal-Audio : – The piercing Star!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : (It is) the Star of piercing brightness―

Verse : 004

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : No soul is there but hath over it a watcher.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels in charge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : There is no human being, but there is a watcher over him.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : No human soul but hath a guardian over it.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : There is no soul but has a protector over it.

Verse : 005

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : So let man look – from what is he created.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : So let man see from what he is created!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So, let man consider of which stuff he is created.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : So let man consider from what he is created.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Now let man but think from what he is created!

Verse : 006

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : He is created from a water drip-ping,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He is created from a water gushing forth,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : He is created of spouting water
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : He is created from a gushing fluid
Eng-Yusuf Ali : He is created from a drop emitted―

Verse : 007

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : That issueth from between the loins and the breast-bones.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Proceeding from between the back-bone and the ribs,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : That comes out from between the loins and the chest-bones.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : That issued from between the loins and ribs.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

Verse : 008

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Verily He is Able to restore him,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Verily, (Allâh) is Able to bring him back (to life)!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Surely He is Powerful to bring him back
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!

Verse : 009

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : On a Day whereon secrets shall be out.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth)
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : On a day when all the secrets will be searched out,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : The Day that (all) things secret will be tested.

Verse : 010

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Then he shall have no power nor any helper.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Then he will have no power, nor any helper.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And he will have neither strength (to defend), nor a supporter.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Then will he have no might nor any helper.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : (Man) will have no power, and no helper.

Verse : 011

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : By the heaven which returneth,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By the sky (having rain clouds) which gives rain, again and again.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : I swear by the sky that rains,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Firmament which returns (in its round),

Verse : 012

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And by the earth which splitteth,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And the earth which splits (with the growth of trees and plants),
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And the earth that cracks open (for plants),
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation)―

Verse : 013

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Verily, it is a discourse distinguishing.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Verily, this (the Qur’ân) is the Word that separates (the truth from falsehood, and commands strict laws for mankind to cut the roots of evil).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : This is a decisive word,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! this (Qur’an) is a conclusive word,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):

Verse : 014

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And it is not a frivolity.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And it is not a thing for amusement.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And it is not a joke.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : It is no pleasantry.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : It is not a thing for amusement.

Verse : 015

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Verily they are plotting a plot.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Verily, they are but plotting a plot (against you O Muhammad (SAW)).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : They are devising plans,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)
Eng-Yusuf Ali : As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

Verse : 016

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And I am plotting a plot.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And I (too) am planning a plan.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And I Am devising plans.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And I plot a plot (against them).
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And I am planning a scheme.

Verse : 017

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : So respite thou the infidels – respite them gently,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : So give a respite to the disbelievers; deal gently with them for a while.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So leave the disbelievers alone at the moment; give them respite for a while.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Therefore grant a delay to the unbelievers: give respite to them gently (for a while).
