Verse : 001

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : By the Dawn,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By the dawn;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : I swear by the dawn,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : By the Dawn
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Break of Day

Verse : 002

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and by the ten nights,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hîjjah) [],
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And by Ten Nights,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And ten nights,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Nights twice five;

Verse : 003

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and by the even and the odd,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allâh)[]Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And by the even and the odd,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And the Even and the Odd,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Even and Odd (contrasted);

Verse : 004

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and by night when it departs
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And by the night when it departs
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And by the night when it moves away,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And the night when it departeth,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And by the Night when it passeth away―

Verse : 005

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : indeed in them is an oath for man of sense.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs)!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Is there (not) in such an oath (enough assurance) for a man of sense?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : There surely is an oath for thinking man.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Is there (not) in these and adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?

Verse : 006

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Did thou not see how thy Lord dealt with the Ad,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Saw you (O Muhammad (SAW)) not how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad (people)
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with (the people) of ‘Ad
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A’ad,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the `Ad (people)―

Verse : 007

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and the people of many-columned Iram,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Of Iram (Who were very tall) like (lofty) pillars,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Of Iram , the men of tall pillars,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : With many-columned Iram,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,

Verse : 008

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : the like of which was not built in the cities,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : The like of which were not created in the land?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : The like of whom were never created in the lands,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : The like of which was not created in the lands;
Eng-Yusuf Ali : The like of which were not produced in (all) the land?

Verse : 009

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And (with) Thamûd (people), who hewed out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)?[]Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And (how He dealt) with (the people of) Thamud who had carved out the rocks in the Valley (of Qura),
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And with the Thamud (people) who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?–

Verse : 010

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And with Firawn, owner of the stakes —
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And (with) Fir’aun (Pharaoh), who had the stakes (to torture men by binding them to stakes)?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And with Fir‘aun (Pharaoh), the man of the stakes,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And with Pharaoh, firm of might,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And with Pharaoh, Lord of Stakes?

Verse : 011

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : who all waxed exorbitant in the cities;
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allâh).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Those who had rebelled in the cities,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands.

Verse : 012

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : so they multiplied corruption therein,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And made therein much mischief.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And spread a lot of mischief therein.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And multiplied iniquity therein?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And heaped therein Mischief (on mischief).

Verse : 013

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : So thy Lord inflicted on them the scourage of His chastisement.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So, your Lord let loose on them the whip of torment.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse Chastisement:

Verse : 014

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Surely your Lord is ever on the watch.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : For thy Lord is (As a Guardian) on a watch-tower.

Verse : 015

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : As for man — when his Lord tries him and honours him, and is bountiful to him, he says: my Lord has honoured me.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and bounties, then he says (in): “My Lord has honoured me.”
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : As for man, when his Lord tests him, and thus gives him honour and bounties, he says, “My Lord has honoured me.”
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up) “My Lord hath honoured me.”

Verse : 016

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And when his lord tries him and stints unto him his provision, he says: my lord has despised me.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me!”
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : But when he tests him, and thus straitens his provision for him, he says, “My Lord has disgraced me.”
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair) “My Lord hath humiliated me!”

Verse : 017

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed I but you do not honour the orphan,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : No! But you do not honour the orphan,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!

Verse : 018

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And urge not one another on the feeding of AlMiskîn (the poor)!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And do not encourage one another to feed the needy.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And urge not on the feeding of the poor.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Nor, do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!―

Verse : 019

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and you devour the inheritance greedily,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And you devour inheritance all with greed,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And you devour the inheritance with a sweeping gulp,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And ye devour heritages with devouring greed.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And ye devour inheritance― all with greed.

Verse : 020

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and you love riches with exceeding love.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And you love wealth with much love!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And love wealth, an excessive love.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And love wealth with abounding love.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And ye love wealth with inordinate love!

Verse : 021

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed I when the earth is ground with exceeding grinding,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Nay! When the earth is ground to powder,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : No! When the earth will be crushed thoroughly to be turned into bits,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Nay! when the earth is pounded to powder,

Verse : 022

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and comes thy Lord and the angles, rank on rank,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And your Lord comes with the angels in rows,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And your Lord will come, and the angels as well, lined up in rows,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And thy Lord cometh, and His angels rank upon rank,

Verse : 023

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and hell that Day is brought near. man on that Day shall remember, but how can remembrance avail him them?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And Jahannam (Hell), on that day, will be brought forward, it will be the day when man will realize the truth, but from where will he take advantage of such realization?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face) on that Day will man remember but how will that remembrance profit him?

Verse : 024

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Man will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He will say: “Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!”
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : He will say, “O Would that I had sent ahead (some good deeds) for (this) my life!”
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : He will say: “Ah! would that I had sent forth (Good Deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life.”

Verse : 025

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : So on that Day none shall torment any like His torment,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So no one can punish like He will punish, that day,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : None punisheth as He will punish on that day!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,

Verse : 026

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : nor shall blind any like His bond.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And none will bind (the wicked, disbelivers and polytheists) as He will bind.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Nor can anyone shackle like He will shackle.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : None bindeth as He then will bind.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind.

Verse : 027

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : O thou peaceful soul!
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : (It will be said to the pious — believers of Islamic Monothesim): “O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : As for an obedient man, it will be said to him,) “O content soul,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : But ah! thou soul at peace!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : (To the righteous soul will be said:) “O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!

Verse : 028

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Return unto thy Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : “Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing (unto Him)!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Come back to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : “Come back thou to thy Lord well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!

Verse : 029

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Enter thou among My righteous bondmen,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : “Enter you, then, among My (honoured) slaves,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So, enter among My (special) servants,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Enter thou among My bondmen!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : “Enter thou, then among my Devotees!

Verse : 030

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and enter thou My Garden.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : “And enter you My Paradise!”
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And enter My Paradise.”
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Enter thou My Garden!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : “Yea, enter thou my Heaven”!
