Verse : 001

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : I swear by this city,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : I swear by this city (Makkah);
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : I swear by this city,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Nay, I swear by this city –
Eng-Yusuf Ali : I do call to witness this City―

Verse : 002

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and thou shalt be allowed in this city —
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And you are free (from sin and to punish the enemies of Islâm on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah)[] ,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And (O Prophet,) you are going to be allowed (to fight) in this city
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And thou art an indweller of this city –
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And thou art a freeman of this City―

Verse : 003

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and by the begetter and what he begat,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And by the begetter (i.e. Adam A.S.) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny);
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And by the father and all those he begot,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And the begetter and that which he begat,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And (the mystic ties of) Parent and Child―

Verse : 004

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : assuredly We have created man in toil.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Verily, We have created man in toil.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Indeed We have created man (to live) in hard struggle.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : We verily have created man in an atmosphere:
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Verily We have created Man into toil and struggle.

Verse : 005

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Does he think that none can overcome him?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Does he think that none can overcome him?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Does he think that no one has power over him?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Thinketh he that none hath power over him?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?

Verse : 006

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : He says: I have squandered abundant riches.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He says (boastfully): “I have wasted wealth in abundance!”
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : He says, “I have spent a lot of wealth.”
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:
Eng-Yusuf Ali : He may say (boastfully): “Wealth have I squandered in abundance!”

Verse : 007

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Does he suppose that no one has seen him?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Does he think that none sees him?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Does he think that no one has seen him?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

Verse : 008

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Have We not made for him two eyes?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Did We not make for him two eyes,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Did We not assign unto him two eyes
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?―

Verse : 009

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and a tongue and two lips,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And a tongue and a pair of lips?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And one tongue and two lips,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And a tongue and two lips,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And a tongue, and a pair of lips?―

Verse : 010

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and shown to him the two highways?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And shown him the two ways (good and evil)?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And showed him the two ways?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And shown him the two highways?

Verse : 011

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Yet he does not attempt the steep.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep (i.e. the path which will lead to goodness and success).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Yet he did not make his way through the steep course,[QETafseerComment]Eng-Pickthal-Audio : But he hath not attempted the Ascent –
Eng-Yusuf Ali : But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.

Verse : 012

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And what shall make thee understand what the steep is?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And what will make you know the path that is steep?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And what may let you know what the steep course is?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! –
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And what will explain to thee, the path that is steep?

Verse : 013

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : It is freeing the neck —
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : (It is) Freeing a neck (slave)[]Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : It is) freeing of the neck of a slave,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : (It is) to free a slave,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : (It is:) freeing the bondman;

Verse : 014

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : or, feeding in day of privation,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine),
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Or giving food in a day of hunger
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And to feed in the day of hunger.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Or the giving of food in a day of privation

Verse : 015

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : an orphan of kin,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : To an orphan near of kin.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : To an orphan near of kin,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : An orphan near of kin,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : To the orphan with claims of relationship,

Verse : 016

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : or a poor man, cleaving to the dust.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Or to a Miskîn (poor) cleaving to dust (out of misery).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Or to a needy person lying in dust [QETafseerComment]Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Or some poor wretch in misery,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.

Verse : 017

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Then he become one of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Then he became one of those who believed, (in the Islamic Monothsim) and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Then he did join those who believe and advise each other to be patient and advise each other to be merciful.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.

Verse : 018

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : These are the fellows of the right-hand.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : They are those on the Right Hand (i.e. the dwellers of Paradise),
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Those are the People of the Right Hand. (i.e. their books of deeds will be given in their right hands)
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Their place will be on the right hand.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.

Verse : 019

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And those who disbelieved in Our signs — they are the fellows of the left-hand.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : But those who disbelieved in Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell)
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : As for those who reject Our verses, they are the People of the Left Hand. (i.e. their books of deeds will be given in their left hands.)
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) companions of the Left Hand.

Verse : 020

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Over them shall be the Fire closing round.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet.[]Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Upon them will be the Fire, enveloping them with closed exits.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Fire will be an awning over them.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : On them will be Fire Vaulted over (all round).
