Al-Lail (THE NIGHT)

Verse : 001

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : By the night when it envelops,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By the night as it envelops;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : I swear by the night when it covers (the sun),
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : By the night enshrouding
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Night as it conceals (the light);

Verse : 002

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : by the day when it appears in glory,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By the day as it appears in brightness;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And by the day when it unveils itself,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And the day resplendent
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By the Day as it appears in glory;

Verse : 003

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : by Him who has created the male and the female,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : By Him Who created male and female;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And by the One who created the male and the female,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And Him Who hath created male and female,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female―

Verse : 004

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : verily your endeavours are diverse.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes);
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Your efforts are diverse:
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Verily (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.

Verse : 005

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Then as for him who gives and fears Him,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allâh and fears Him,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : As for the one who gives (in charity) and fears Allah,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)
Eng-Yusuf Ali : So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),

Verse : 006

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and testifies to the Good,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And believes in Al-Husna.[]Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And believes in the best (religion),
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And believeth in goodness;
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And (in all sincerity) testifies to the Best―

Verse : 007

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : to him We shall indeed make easy the path to ease.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : We will facilitate for him the way to extreme ease (i.e. the comforts of Paradise).
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.

Verse : 008

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And as for him who stints and is unheeding,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient.[]Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : But the one who is miser and deems himself self-sufficient,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient.

Verse : 009

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and who belies the Good,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And gives belies Al-Husna (See the footnote of the Verse No: 6);
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And rejects the best (religion),
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And disbelieveth in goodness;
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And gives the lie to the Best―

Verse : 010

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : to him we shall indeed make easy the path to hardship,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : We will make smooth for him the path for evil;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : We will facilitate for him the way to extreme distress.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Surely We will ease his way unto adversity.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : We will indeed make smooth for him the Path to Misery;

Verse : 011

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and when he perished his substance will not avail him.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And what will his wealth avail him when he goes down (in destruction).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And his wealth will not help him when he will fall down (into Hell).
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : His riches will not save him when he perisheth.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).

Verse : 012

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Verily on Us is the guidance.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Truly! on Us is (to give) guidance,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Of course, it is undertaken by Us to guide,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide.

Verse : 013

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And verily Ours is both the Hereafter and the present life.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And in Our control is the Hereafter and the worldly life.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.

Verse : 014

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Wherefore I have warned you of a flaming Fire.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Therefore I have warned you of a blazing (Hell);
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So I have warned you of a blazing fire.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;

Verse : 015

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : None shall roast therein except the most wretched,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : None shall enter it save the most wretched,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : None will enter it but the wretched one,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Which only the most wretched must endure,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones

Verse : 016

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : who denies and turns away.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Who denies and turns away.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Who rejected (the truth) and turned away (from it).
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : He who denieth and turneth away.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.

Verse : 017

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And the pious shall avoid it altogether,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And Al-Muttaqûn (the pious and righteous – see V.2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And saved from it will be the most God-fearing one,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Far removed from it will be the righteous
Eng-Yusuf Ali : But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it―

Verse : 018

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : he who spends his substance that he may be cleansed,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Who gives his wealth (in charity) to become purified,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,

Verse : 019

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : and who has no favour from any one to pay back,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : And who has (in mind) no favour from anyone,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : While no one has conferred any favour on him for which he would give a return,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : And none hath with him any favour for reward,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,

Verse : 020

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : but only seeks the goodwill of his Lord the Most High.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Except to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High;
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : But (he gave his wealth in charity) only to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : But only the desire to seek for the countenance of their Lord Most High.

Verse : 021

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : And soon he shall be well-pleased.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He surely, will be pleased (when he will enters Paradise).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : And surely he will soon be happy.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : He verily will be content.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
