Verse : 001

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who has created everything–
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists),
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Read with the name of your Lord who created (every thing),
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created―

Verse : 002

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : has created man from a clot!
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood)
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : He created man from a clot of blood.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Createth man from a clot.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

Verse : 003

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Recite thou, and thy Lord is the Most Bountiful,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Read, and your Lord is the most gracious,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful―

Verse : 004

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Who has taught man by the pen —
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Who has taught (the writing) by the pen.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Who imparted knowledge by means of the pen.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Who teacheth by the pen,
Eng-Yusuf Ali : He Who taught (the use of) the Pen―

Verse : 005

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : has taught man what he knew not.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : He has taught man that which he knew not.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : He taught man what he did not know.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Teacheth man that which he knew not.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Taught man that which he knew not.

Verse : 006

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed: Verily man exorbitates,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Nay! Verily, man does transgress (in disbelief and evil deed).
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : In fact, man crosses the limits,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Nay, but verily man is rebellious
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,

Verse : 007

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : as he considers himself self-sufficient.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Because he considers himself self-sufficient.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Because he deems himself to be free of need.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : That he thinketh himself independent!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.

Verse : 008

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Truly to thy Lord is the return.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Surely! unto your Lord is the return.
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Surely to your Lord is the return.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Verily to thy Lord is the return (of all).

Verse : 009

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Hast thou considered him who forbids,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Have you (O Muhammad (SAW)) seen him (i.e. Abû Jahl) who prevents,
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Have you seen him who forbids
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Seest thou one who forbids.―

Verse : 010

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : a bondman of Ours when he prays
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : A slave (Muhammad (SAW)) when he prays?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : A servant of Allah when he prays?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : A slave when he prayeth?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : A votary when he (turns) to pray?

Verse : 011

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Hast thou considered, if he is himself guided,
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Tell me, if he (Muhammad (SAW)) is on the guidance (of Allâh)
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Tell me, if he is on the right path,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Seest thou if He is on (the road of) Guidance?―

Verse : 012

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : or, he commands piety?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Or enjoins piety!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Or bids piety, (would the former still forbid him?)
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Or enjoineth piety?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Or enjoins Righteousness?

Verse : 013

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Hast thou considered, if he denies and turns away?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Tell me if he (Abû Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Qur’ân), and turns away?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Tell me, if he rejects (the true faith) and turns away,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah’s guidance) and is froward?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?

Verse : 014

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Does he not know that Allah sees?
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Knows he not that Allâh does see (what he does)?
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : Does he not know that Allah is watching (him)?
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?

Verse : 015

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed: If he desists not, We shall seize and deal him by the forelock —
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Nay! If he (Abû Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock —
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : No! If he does not desist, We will certainly drag (him) by forelock,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock –
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock―

Verse : 016

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : a forelock, laying, sinning.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : A lying, sinful forelock!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : A lying, sinful forelock.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : The lying, sinful forelock –
Eng-Yusuf Ali : A lying sinful forelock!

Verse : 017

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : Well, then, let him call his assembly.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers),
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : So let him call the men of his council,
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Then let him call upon his henchmen!
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):

Verse : 018

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : We also shall call the infernal guards.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : We will call the soldiers of the Hell.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : We will call the guards of hell.
Eng-Yusuf Ali : We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!

Verse : 019

Eng-Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed! Do not obey thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw near.
Eng-Dr. Mohsin : Nay! (O Muhammad (SAW))! Do not obey him (Abû Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allâh!
Eng-Mufti-Taqi-Usmani-Audio : No! Never obey him, and bow down in sajdah, and come close to Me.
Eng-Pickthal-Audio : Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
Eng-Yusuf Ali : Nay, heed him not: but prostrate in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
